Keep Your Smile Bright for Longer

Teeth whitening is a simple way to enhance your smile, but what you do after your treatment matters just as much as the procedure itself. The first 48 hours are especially important because your teeth are more open to staining during this time. Following the right steps can help you maintain your results and keep your smile looking bright. Being mindful of what you eat and drink during this period can make a noticeable difference in how long your whitening lasts.

Below are easy guidelines to help you protect and extend your whitening results.

Why the First 48 Hours Matter

After whitening, your teeth temporarily lose their natural protective layer. This layer usually takes about 12–24 hours to fully rebuild. Taking extra care during this period helps lock in your brighter smile.

During this time:

  • Your teeth are more likely to absorb stains
  • Dark or colored substances can affect your results

What to Avoid

For the next 48 hours, avoid anything that may stain your teeth, including:
  • Tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, vaping, chewing tobacco)
  • Red or white wine
  • Coffee and tea
  • Soda or soft drinks
  • Berries
  • Colored sauces (ketchup, mustard, soy sauce, marinara, etc.)
  • Colored lip products
Tip: If it can stain a white shirt, it can stain your teeth.

Oral Care After Whitening

  • Avoid colored toothpaste, gels, or powders for 48 hours
  • Do not use colored mouthwash or fluoride treatments
  • If you use products like Chlorhexidine (Perio Rx), wait at least 48 hours before resuming
Using neutral or clear products helps prevent unwanted staining during this sensitive period.

Managing Sensitivity

Some people may experience mild sensitivity after whitening. This is normal and usually temporary. Sensitivity should improve within a day or two.

To reduce discomfort:

  • Chew sugar-free gum
  • Take Advil or Tylenol if needed
  • Avoid very hot or cold foods for a short time
